HISTORIC TOWN HALL MUSEUM
The lectures will be given at Homestead Town Museum on 41 N. Krome Avenue at 7:00 PM (doors will be open at 6:30 PM). Refreshments will be served at the end of each lecture, allowing time to get acquainted with the speakers. The lectures are open to the public and free of charge, sponsored by the Historic Town Hall Museum, Pioneer Museum, and Homestead Main Street.

Hugo Vihlen
January 22, 2009 - Hugo Vihlen "Across the Atlantic in a Six-foot Sailboat"
On April 1, 1968, Hugo Vihlen made a solo voyage across the Atlantic, 4,480 miles, in a mini sailboat measuring a mere 5 feet, 11 7/8 inches in overall length. For 85 days this small plywood and fiberglass boat braved rough seas never drifting more than ten miles off course throughout the voyage. He will also recount his 1993 North Atlantic crossing in his 5 foot 4 inches boat.

Arva Moore Parks, a Miami native with a master's degree in history, has been researching and writing about South Florida for more than 30 years. She is the author of several award winning documentaries and biiks and will be speaking about her upcoming biography of George Merrick. Among her many hinirs, she held a presidential appointment to the Federal Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.

Bob Jensen, retired Vice President of First National Bank and currently the President of the Florida Pioneer Museum in Florida City will speak on the history of the Homestead Army Air Field, from its build up in 1942, during World War II, to its present status as the Homestead Air Reserve Base. Learn the interesting social and economic impact this major hub had in Homestead back in the war years and the continuing role it plays in present day Homestead.

April, 23, 2009 - Robert Fuchs, "Robert's Road"
The world famous and award winning orchid grower Robert Fuchs, owner of R. F. Orchids, will be presenting his new book "Robert's Road" at this wonderful evening of Homestead history combined with the intriguing world of orchid growing. In 1921 the present site of R.F. Orchids was given as a wedding gift to Fred and Louise Fuchs and Robert's father, Fred Jr. was born there in 1923. Since the early 40's the family ran an orchid farm at this site. Mr. Fuchs will be here to tell the story of not only the amazing sucess of R.F. Orchid,but his own fascination with the world of world class orchid competition.

Jerry Wilkerson is the president of the Historical Preservation Society of the Upper Keys. This evening he presents the story of William J. Krome, his family and the diary Krome compiled during the building Flagler's extention of the Florida East Coast Railway to Key West.
